1. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson – I feel sort of guilty about this one. I got maybe halfway through, put it down, and never picked it back up. I can’t even remember why I abandoned it. Now I just don’t feel like starting over, so it will forever shame me from my bookshelf.
2. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – Another book I started reading but never finished. I heard so many good things, and I think I enjoyed it during the brief period I was reading, but I can’t go back.
3. Dear Killer by Katherine Ewell – I was so excited about this book, but I’ve read a few reviews which put a bad taste in my mouth. Also, I’m just not sure I could handle a teenage serial killer.
4. Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver – I fell hard for book 1 (Delirium) of this series, but I just can’t bring myself to read book 2. It bugs me when authors separate their protagonists from the love interests, simply to throw up another obstacle. Grr.
5. The Jewel by Amy Ewing – Interesting premise, but I’ve read too many negative reviews to give it a shot. Maybe someday, but I’m already drowning in my current TBR pile.
6. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling – This is the first book Rowling published following the Harry Potter series, and I can imagine she was under a lot of pressure. I just don’t want the book to tarnish my perspective of her. I’ve read her Robert Galbraith books (and absolutely LOVED them!) but I will not read this one.
7. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt – I tried, guys. I really tried.
8. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – So many recommendations! Maybe I’ll come back to it a few years from now.
9. A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin – These books require such a time commitment. And there are so many characters to keep up with. I just wanted to find out what happened to Arya, and it seemed like there were a million pages between me and Arya’s next chapter.
10. The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon – Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan of The Bone Season, but I was curious to see if the sequel might be any better. It sat at the top of my TBR for weeks and then I decided to return it to the library because it was overdue…
Have you read these books?? Should I give them a second chance? Share your thoughts!
I really enjoyed Gone Girl but only read it in January of this year so I felt the bandwagon had done passed. It was enjoyable…and twisted. I still don’t quite know how I feel about it. So many people rave over The Girl of Fire and Thorns but I have not felt compelled to pick it up either. Nice list and thanks for sharing!

I know so many people who really enjoyed Gone Girl! And typically I like books like that – I’m a huge fan of mystery/intrigue. Not sure why I couldn’t get into it. Thanks for commenting, Barb! 🙂
I probably should have added The Casual Vacancy to my list. I have the book, keep thinking that I want to read it. Even as I hear more about The Cormoran Strike Novels, I still can’t pick them up to read. Now if she ever re-visited Harry Potter, you couldn’t keep me away from reading them. Great list.

Hi Brenda! Yeah, I agree – it’s difficult to associate J.K. Rowling with anybody but Harry Potter. For some reason I think about the Cormoran Strike novels differently, maybe because she originally wrote Cuckoo’s Calling under a pseudonym? Also it’s a completely separate genre so I’m not tempted to compare. Are you a fan of mystery?? You might want to give it a try! And do you have a Pottermore account? I haven’t been on recently but there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes HP info!
I do have a Pottermore account, but too haven’t visited in awhile. I’ve heard she added stories and lots more content there. I really should check it out again. I do like mysteries, but think I just didn’t start her adult books because at first I thought this is all there will be. I didn’t want the feeling of reading Harry Potter to end. I think it’s the same reason I’ve only read Lauren Oliver’s MG books. I loved Liesel and Po and Spindlers but have yet to read Rooms or Delerium. Guess I’m strange that way
No, not strange!! I can totally understand wanting to hold onto that original feeling your favorite books have given you. And Harry Potter especially – it’s a season of my life I’ll never forget. I consider myself lucky to have grown up alongside Harry, Ron, Hermione, and all the other characters. Now that I’m on summer break, I look forward to revisiting Pottermore. 🙂 And also rereading the books and rewatching all the movies! (Summer tradition!)
I have no intention of reading The Casual Vacancy either, it’s on my list. I put the whole Delirium trilogy on mine as the subject matter just doesn’t interest me. Gone Girl is good, so if you ever do feel like reading it you should.

Yeah, I think I’ll give Gone Girl another shot. I’ve heard so many good things! But also I already know how it ends and I think that would take away some of the fun. 🙁 Thanks for commenting, JJ!
Gone Girl, was really great!! I recommend reading before the movie if you haven’t seen it. Awesome Post!

Definitely!! I try to never read books before watching the movies – it’s so much more fun to have read the book and then to watch it play out on the screen. 🙂 Thanks for commenting, Tori!
